her most recent work, Johanna Unzueta utilizes materials and techniques usually
associated with the practice of dressmaking, creating pieces that are decorative
and yet always just a little bit jarring. Three pictures is a series of drawings
made with felt cut-outs, taken from the covers of a group of children’s
books published at the turn of the 20th century and which rather than simply
replicate their sources, strategically eliminate certain elements to produce
a more ambiguous and strange rendition. Self-Portrait is a simple, unedited
video piece that documents the seemingly banal act of going grocery shopping
with her newborn baby Salvador, but is explicitly performative in the artist’s
alteration of her appearance which turns what would otherwise be a cute or endearing
scene into an image that is at once humorous and disturbing."
